Trade Possibility: Dennis Wideman
Dennis Wideman of the Calgary Flames could be on the move this summer. The 33 year old defenseman has one year left on his contract at a 5.25 million cap hit and a 6 million salary.
Wideman has his fair share of issues, including his incident with a referee late last season, but still provides an offensive upside. He had 19 points last year, and is one year removed from a 15 goal season.
The Flames have a number of defensemen under contract for next year making Wideman expendable. Brodie, Giordano, Hamilton, Jokipakka, Nakadal, and Wotherspoon will all be competing for spots, with the likes of Engelland and others being the depth. That doesn’t include potential free agent signings, either.
There would be a number of teams interested in Dennis Wideman. The Sabres, Oilers, Sharks, and Bruins could all be there looking for a puck moving defenseman.
Due to his salary, the return won’t be large. But with a year left, Wideman can be a low risk, high reward add.
I’d suspect a deal would get done closer to training camp when cap situations are figured out, but anything is possible.
